Kingsman The Secret Service – review

kingsman_the_secret_service_ver7Imagine if James Bond was a chav from a council flat rather than from Eton and you have Kingsman The Secret Service.

This movie is a lot of fun. Lots of action sequences and suspense. Funny in places but also surprisingly and shockingly violent and bloody in places.

Part of the reason it works quite so well is that the cast look like they are having a great time. It might be an affectionate pastiche of every old spy movie going but it knows it. Everyone knows who is playing the Q character and who is the M. Mark Strong and Samuel L Jackson in particular are going all out. It ignores all of the dark and gritty spy movies of the recent past and just has fun with goofy storylines and outlandish plots.

It is difficult to call who delivers the standout performance, newcomer Taron Egerton, who carries the majority of the movie on his shoulders or Colin Firth whose deadpan delivery and fight choreography are two things the world did not expect from Mr Darcy.

Although not perfect, it’s a little repetitive and sluggish in the middle. And that joke at the end of the movie, that has caused a lot of bother, yes I agree, it was completely out of character and I didn’t like it. But just try and ignore it and enjoy what the rest of the movie has to offer.
